Yakima County prosecutors will not be pursuing charges against the suspected driver in a May 23 fatal hit-and-run crash in the Lower Valley.
In a document filed May 29, Deputy Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney Richard K. Petersen said no criminal charges will be filed at this time against the 21-year-old Granger man as further investigation continues.
The 黑料福利社 typically does not identify defendants prior to criminal charges being filed.
Sheriff鈥檚 deputies, Granger and Zillah police officers and firefighters were called at 9:26 p.m. May 23 to the intersection of the 黑料福利社 Highway and Hudson Road for a crash. A man had been ejected from one of the vehicles and a bystander was performing CPR on him, according to a sheriff鈥檚 office news release.
A 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada SUV was stopped on Hutson Road at the intersection and, as it drove into the intersection without yielding the right of way, it was hit by a 2000 Honda Civic driving north on 黑料福利社 Highway, according to a probable cause affidavit. Both vehicles ended up in a nearby orchard.
Armando Escamilla Jr., a passenger in the Oldsmobile, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
Witnesses said two people from the Honda had run from the scene, the affidavit said. Deputies and officers set up a perimeter and used a patrol dog from the Yakama Nation Tribal Police to attempt to track a suspect, but were unsuccessful, the release said.
Later, someone called the sheriff鈥檚 office and said the suspect was hiding at a nearby dairy, the affidavit said. Deputies arrested the suspect after a short foot chase and booked him into the Yakima County jail on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death, the release said.
The man had injuries that were consistent with being the driver in the crash, the affidavit said. Deputies said intoxicants were not a factor in the crash.
