A fast-moving brush fire destroyed two homes in the community of Vantage on Wednesday and burned 575 acres.

No one was injured. The brush fire was reported at 4:45 p.m. along Vantage Highway, according to a news release from the Kittitas County Sheriff鈥檚 Office.

The Ryegrass Coulee fire prompted 鈥済o now鈥 evacuations in Vantage, and a state mobilization of resources was requested. About 80 firefighters responded from around the area. Firefighting aircraft dropped water from the nearby Columbia River.

鈥淭his very fast-moving fire involved and destroyed two primary residences near the north end of Vantage and did extensive damage to equipment on a third property,鈥 the release said.

As of 9 p.m., the evacuations were reduced to a Level 2 "be ready" level for those north of I-90, and people could return home. Interstate 90, which closed in both directions, reopened at 9:30 p.m.

The Vantage Highway remained closed Thursday due to continuing fire activity and downed powerlines.

The fire is believed to have been accidentally caused by a vehicle traveling on the Vantage Highway, the release said. The driver identified himself and is cooperating with the fire investigation.
